Let me explain Yeoh's story: - Yeoh is an Asian American and the first Asian to win the "Best Actress" Oscar. - The reason she “Identifies as Asian” instead of simply saying she's Asian, is because of actress Merle Oberon. - In 1936 Merle Oberon took Hollywood by storm and got the Best Actress nomination, but felt that she had to hide her Asian descent to have a fair chance in Hollywood. - Therefore when Yeoh and the Academy use the 'identifies as Asian,' phrase, they are merely making sure that her predecessor is recognized.
