Great piece here. What’s happening in Soho is repeated across the country, bringing together many of Britain’s economic problems. Burdensome planning/licensing regimes, an ageing society with too much power placed with asset/time rich and presumption in favour of no.
Soho is an asset for the whole of London. It’s a shame that the current leadership of the Soho Society take such a disproportionate approach to licensing. They should support broad licensing and pedestrianising the area, which I wrote about here 👇

Light at the end of the tunnel for Grassroots Music Venues. People who say it can’t be done should get out of the way of people doing it.

The only time a DJ even needs a microphone to be in the booth is in case someone is in serious trouble and the emergency services need to make an announcement.
Those are the sole circumstances for which a mic is necessary.
End of.
On this week’s TMT, we welcome one of the independent sector’s most powerful voices, @AIM_UK interim CEO/Chief Policy Officer Gee Davy. There are big talking points in indie world right now – UMG/PIAS, Merlin/TikTok, streaming remuneration – & Gee has lots to say about them all
This is desperately required. As are responses to all the other recommendations in the excellent Select Committee Report.
Especially the fact that these Oasis shows have contributed nothing at all to the grassroots sector economy.

Yet another hallmark grassroots music venue in my hometown Brighton and Hove is under threat. Please sign this petition to help The Prince Albert and help stop venues being swept aside.

I cannot get my head into the mindset of people who think that music used to be better, or claim there’s no great new music, or stick rigidly to playlists of music from the past. My biggest worry is that there’s so much great new music being made I don’t have time to play it all.
