A few years ago I made a big ol’ project - a short animation, AV performance and EP called Dawta. On June 4th it’s finally going to be online. Can’t wait to share it with you all! 🥰💞

Alt text: A hand drawn frame from an animated video shows the heads of a Black man and woman outlined over layers of photographic and painted materials in vivid colours.
I’ll be running 2 evening workshops at @AutographABP on Oct 11th and 12th. If you fancy learning some basic animation techniques and dabbling in creative soundscapes, come along (to both evenings!) 💖
🌿 WHEN THE REVOLUTION COMES, WE ARE TOGETHER
Three stories to reflect on land and labour exploitation and the animistic, communal ways to rewire our ancestral roots.

“This is a mix of stuff that has happened in my family. There’s a lot of trauma. In the first performance, I was performing my family’s trauma – I needed to change it, it was too much.” @jessiola
ALT A cinema screen in a dark room. On the screen is Spirit Sigh/Jessica Ashman's Dawta – a room with two musicians performing, one holding a guitar, one sitting at a drum kit. Laid over them is a projection of an animation showing a young black girl. The image of the girl is stylised, cut up, disjointed. Captioned lyrics along the bottom of the screen read: I don't know who I want to be.
“If you’re an animator, you’re a control freak in nature. We love movement, and how to explore movement.” – @jessiola
ALT A photograph of three people sitting on stage inside a cinema screening room. All three of them are holding microphones and facing the audience. Behind them is a screen that shows the CAF poster, along with the text: Dawta Q&A with Jessica Ashman.
On Fri 8 April, Jessica Ashman explores inherited trauma in Blackness with Dawta, an experimental animation musical performance.
The screening of the performance will be followed by a Q&A with Jessica, hosted by Abigail Addison.

ALT Image shows two images laid on top of one another. The first is a photograph of a black woman playing an electric guitar. She has long braided hair, and is wearing a pink jacket. A microphone is in front of her, but she is looking down as she is playing. The image laid over the top of the photograph is a digital drawing of a black girl with her back to the camera. She has shot afro hair, which fans out around her head, and is wearing a simple long white dress. Her hands are raised. In the top left of the combined image is the Cardiff Animation Festival logo. In the bottom right is text that reads, "Dawta, plus Q&A with Jessica Ashman."
Me and @AnimateProjects will be taking about my project Dawta, with a screening of my performance at @CardiffAnimFest . There’s gonna be a lot to talk about, this project was huuuuge!
