🚨 FISA 702 EXTENSION FAILS - FREEDOM CAUCUS JOINS DEMOCRATS TO BLOCK IT
In a surprising alliance, House Freedom Caucus members and Democrats joined forces to defeat a short-term extension of FISA Section 702, the foreign intelligence surveillance authority the Trump administration says is critical for tracking terrorists and foreign threats.
The measure failed in a 198-218 vote, despite strong backing from
@POTUS and
@SpeakerJohnson.
But while Democrats opposed the extension over President Trump's appointment of Bill
@Pulte as Acting Director of National Intelligence, conservatives had a very different concern:
FISA has been repeatedly abused to spy on Americans without warrants.
Nineteen Republicans voted no, arguing that any surveillance authority must include stronger protections for American citizens and reforms to prevent future abuses.
The debate now comes down to a fundamental question:
How do we protect America from foreign threats while protecting Americans from government overreach?
For now, FISA 702 remains in limbo as Congress heads into recess.
