Many mosques and Islamic schools have been subjected to similar attacks of arson, vandalism, and racism. We never saw such a rush to condemn and generosity to protect Australian Muslims, nor prime ministers and ministers visiting. #auspol #Synagogue johnmenadue.com/who-benefits…

The US vetoed a ceasefire resolution claiming that it didn't mention the release of the hostages. The resolution asked for the immediate release of these hostages. How can it be ok to lie like this ?

This is more than a street renaming, it’s a message that Joburg stands proudly as an apartheid-free city, committed to values of justice, equality, and solidarity. Just as we fought for freedom in South Africa,we continue to stand with those fighting for justice around the world.

It is with sorrow and great concern that I continue to follow the spread and escalation of the conflict in Lebanon. Let us pray for the victims, for their families, and for peace.

The stalking and pressure on the VC of USYD to resign has yielded some valuable insights in an email to Mark Scott from @ProfStuartRees. Here is a substantial excerpt: β€˜Dear Mark, I do not underestimate the pressure you would have been under regarding the claim that certain students felt unsafe on campus and I note that you were obliged to make an apology for the alleged existence of anti-Semitism at Sydney. Having made many visits to the Gaza Strip, to the West Bank and having had several meetings with Israeli leaders of the peace movement and with leaders of Hamas, I have some understanding of anti-Semitism and of anti-Palestinianism. Back in Sydney, I’ve been disturbed by assumptions that the key prejudice concerns anti-Semitism. The record shows otherwise. In 2015, for example, seminars to discuss death & destruction in Palestine were held by departments of public health, social work/social policy and by the Centre for Peace & Conflict Studies. On each occasion students representing β€˜Hebrew Studies’ arrived in substantial numbers to close down those seminars one of which was to have included an address by a distinguished Palestinian doctor. Physical intimidation by these invading students and their staff was successful. No-one made official complaints. It seemed to be taken for granted that any discussion of the plight of Palestinians must be anti-Semitic. Years earlier, in 2003 I was subject to sustained charges of anti-Semitism over the Sydney Peace Foundations’ choice of the brilliant Palestinian educator and politician Dr. Hanan Ashrawi as the Peace Prize recipient for that year. During that controversy I received significant support not only from Premier Bob Carr but also from former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam and from the Sydney University Chancellor Dame Leonie Kramer. I’m not suggesting that anti-Semitic expressions on the Sydney campus do not exist, but PLEASE, let’s not be overawed by the demands of a hugely powerful lobby at a time when thousands of people in Gaza and in the West Bank have been slaughtered..’ #auspol

Abstaining on a UN resolution about Israel’s behaviour when France and NZ felt free to vote for it only increases the case for Canberra recognising Palestine now, in line with ALP policy. Should have done it mid year with Ireland Spain Norway.

What Israel has just done is, via *any* method, reckless. They blew up countless numbers of people who were driving (meaning cars out of control), shopping (your children are in the stroller standing behind him in the checkout line), et cetera. Indistinguishable from terrorism.

As information comes in about the exploding beepers in Lebanon, it seems now more likely than not to be implanted explosives, not a hack. Why? Too many consistent, very serious injuries. If it were overheated batteries exploding, you'd expect many more small fires & misfires.

In the senate inquiry today we faced a hostile line of questioning by two non-Jewish members of the LNP, which was steeped in pro-Israel propaganda. This attempt to attack the Jewish Council, and refusal to accept that Jewish people might hold a variety of views, shows that this Coalition bill is a political stunt, not motivated out of concern for Jewish people.

#Goodnews Meta Platforms' Oversight Board has said the Facebook parent should not automatically remove the phrase "From the river to the sea", which displays solidarity with Palestinians. The board on Wednesday, which operates independently but is funded by the US social media firm, said the phrase has several meanings, and cannot in itself be deemed to be harmful, violent or discriminatory. The phrase refers to the River Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea, between which lie Israel and the Palestinian territories. It is often chanted at pro-Palestinian demonstrations. While some accuse the phrase of being anti-Semitic, other groups dispute that interpretation. "Context is crucial," said Oversight Board co-chair Pamela San Martin. "Simply removing political speech is not a solution. There needs to be room for debate, especially during times of crisis and conflict." The Oversight Board said it came to the conclusion after it had reviewed three cases involving content posted on Facebook by different users containing the phrase. "We welcome the board's review of our guidance on this matter," Meta said in a statement. "While all of our policies are developed with safety in mind, we know they come with global challenges and we regularly seek input from experts outside Meta, including the Oversight Board." Alex Abdo, litigation director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University that promotes free speech, called the decision by the board "thoughtful (and in my opinion, correct)." trtworld.com/middle-east/met…
