"Quiet Enough to Listen" remains one of my favourite stories I've written. Delighted it won the Ironclad Creative Short Story Competition. The anthology, "Reserved," will be out in print and on Kindle Unlimited later this month. #amwriting #amquerying #writingcommunity

If anyone buys or borrows the anthology on Amazon, a review or a share would mean a great deal. #writingcommunity #shortstory #amquerying

I'm more accustomed to seeing the words of my characters in print than my own, but Exeter Writers have kindly published an interview following my First Prize win in their 2026 Short Story Competition. exeterwriters.org.uk/2026/06…

“I know how much he loved you. Please, Nanny. Let me play it for him, at least.” In a silent house on Priory Road, thirteen-year-old Alfie discovers that some doors stay locked even after the key is found. Winner of the Exeter Writers Short Story Competition 2026. exeterwriters.org.uk/2026/06…

The "Reserved" anthology is out tomorrow. There's a lot of tropical rain in my story, set in Cambodia. A typical line is: "Walking back to my room, a sudden rainstorm emptied the sky." This happened in Ho Chi Minh City today. While I was carrying a cello. Thank God for taxis.

Delighted that "Quiet Enough to Listen", set in sleepy Kampot, has won the Ironclad Creative Short Story Competition. Ironclad do excellent work supporting neurodivergent writers. “I could choose to be present, I thought — not to hold but to notice.” #ShortFiction #AmWriting #WritingCommunity

Delighted to share that I've won the Exeter Writers Short Story Competition 2026 with A House Without Song. The story will be published on the Exeter Writers website soon. exeterwriters.org.uk/2026/06… #WritingCommunity #ShortStory #ShortFiction #AmWriting

Help needed! I’ve written a collection of 16 realist short stories rooted in Wales. Several stories published in journals so far, including prize winners and shortlistings. I’m unagented and unsure where literary short story collections even go now. Would welcome recommendations from people who know the small-press landscape. Feel a bit like giving up.

I'm still looking for a small press who might be interested in an unpublished but prize-listed short story collection. I’d appreciate any leads. Twelve stories have appeared online or in print, including a prize winner. #amquerying #literaryfiction #shortstories #writingcommunity

I just reread this one while sequencing the collection, and the final third made me well up. Yes, I'm overly sentimental - my grandad always said the Lee men had small hands and cried too easily - but perhaps it will resonate with you too.

I'm dubious about AI detection tools as presumably AI is trained on the vast amount of classic fiction and journals in the public domain. A story I wrote 20 years ago came back as 43% AI written on one, so make of that what you will. Still, this graph from Pangram is concerning.

We tested every Commonwealth Short Story Prize winner since 2012. We found three more AI-generated stories -- two among the 2026 winners, as well as the 2025 overall winner.

Of course this sounds like sour grapes coming from a writer repeatedly rejected by Granta, but there is something of the uncanny valley about this piece in the way it insists upon itself. Almost every sentence strains toward significance, toward lyricism. theguardian.com/books/2026/m…
