How Birmingham City Council went ‘bankrupt’ being unnecessarily forced to pay hundreds of £millions into its pension fund to pay off a deficit which never existed. It was always in surplus. Labour didn’t listen. They’re not listening now.

“The UK's Local Government Pension Scheme’s assets are now over £0.5 Trillion. Its management expenses hit £3Bn 2025-26.”
Greater Manchester’s £32Bn fund is the biggest with a £10B surplus.
Unlocking this UK Secret Wealth Garden, & its taxpayer-owned surplus of £250 billion &putting it to work at the most local levels in the UK economy is a radical policy waiting to happen.” @AndyBurnhamGMblogsfromtheblackstuff.com/b…
Burnham's backyard blunder? The Scandal Nobody Noticed: £10.4B surplus in the Greater Manchester Pension Fund, starved from GM Economy. blogsfromtheblackstuff.com/b… Time for Action, Man. Get the money back to GM &get Makerfield its £420m. Questions for @AndyBurnhamGM@MayorofGM

The Secret Wealth Garden: how clueless, unquestioning local councils have stored 100s of £billions in their pension funds, whilst cutting services &hiking council tax. blogsfromtheblackstuff.com/b… Now 100s of £billions in surplus, these surpluses will never pay out a penny in pensions, ever and are legally and beneficially taxpayers' assets. And handing over £2.2 billion a year of taxpayers' money to investment bankers, when it could have been done massively better, and for 1/10 of the price.
The hardest-working, most dedicated, loyal-to-Labour councillor I ever worked with. Diane demanded nothing, gave everything.
It’s over for Labour in Birmingham &beyond if they lose folk like @Diane4HodgeHill Shame on them. Hodge Hill needs her, &still has her, thankfully.

Always great to talk to the legendary @edjames@bbcwm, on the new make of @bhamcitycouncil, sorting the bin strike, cutting pension fund overpayments, sorting pot holes and getting the commissioners out of Brum.
Prof Bailey and Clancy were prophets of pensions in their own town, dismissed because the truth was inconvenient. Those who squandered millions of pounds of public money should now feel a fraction of the concern and pain experienced by those who have borne the cost of their decisions.
The brilliant @RobinJPowell updated this a few weeks ago. It’s a must-read. But especially for any new councillor going onto a local government Pension Fund. &for Birmingham City Council’s new administration cabinet, &its out-of-depth Chief Commissioner. evidenceinvestor.com/post/co…
“…intervention must not become occupation. Commissioners are not councillors…. They are appointed from above, report upwards and exercise influence sideways.”
