LAPD shot & killed Jameson, the dog wearing a Knicks jersey. LAPD has a $3.6 BILLION BUDGET to support/maintain 8,555 officers. It’s the MOST DIFFICULT department to hold accountable because City Hall lacks political will. This can change via CHARTER REFORM & the NOV ELECTION‼️

BREAKING: A source close to the IRGC says there is "growing satisfaction" inside the Revolutionary Guards over the deal, with IRGC Commander Ahmad Vahidi saying "first, we take the money" in reference to the $300 billion in reconstruction funds and $24 billion in frozen funds Iran is receiving, and then the IRGC takes over the Strait of Bab al-Mandeb after Hormuz, where it plans to "play exactly the same game." The IRGC's internal assessment is that Iran preserved its ballistic missile program, full regional proxy network, complete control over Hormuz and ability to rebuild while extracting hundreds of billions of US dollars and recognition, with discussions already focused on "the day after the agreement, not the agreement itself."

New update on Fable 5: and it's less about jailbreaks than anyone initially thought. Via Axios The Axios story that just dropped today reframes the whole thing: Anthropic hired a cybersecurity expert to review Amazon's findings and push back on the government's narrative. The administration viewed her as a "radical Democrat." She was then publicly celebrated by Chris Krebs, the official Trump just fired. That didn't help. Behind the scenes, officials describe a company that simply doesn't know how to talk to this administration. "It's like they just speak different languages," one source said. "Everybody said Anthropic was a bad actor. Some of us said it was time to give them a chance. Now those people are questioning that. They screwed us." Today: Anthropic staffers meet with Commerce, the CIA, and White House science advisor Michael Kratsios to work through compliance with the cyber executive order. The technical question - can Fable 5 be jailbroken - is almost secondary now. This is a story about a company that keeps losing the room. Ill keep you updated.
Just now: Anthropic is flying senior technical staff to Washington to repair its fight with the White House after export controls forced its top models, Mythos and Fable, offline. The company is now trying to convince officials that the models can be safely controlled, turning this into a real-time test case for AI geopolitics. Via Axios Monday is getting more interesting by the minute.

Americans after paying $300 billion to Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz which was never closed

BREAKING: Iran says the US has agreed to pay $300 billion in reconstruction funds directly to Iran as part of the deal Pakistan announced, alongside the release of $24 billion in frozen funds with $12 billion released before negotiations even start, per Mehr News. This directly contradicts Trump's & Vance's claim that no funds will be transferred to Iran at all. If Trump denies this is true, there never was a deal. If Trump confirms, the US has fully capitulated to Iran's demands.

LA deliberately cut its housing capacity from ~10M to ~4M homes through single-family zoning. It hit that cap in the 1990s, then added 5x more jobs than homes 2010–2015. The result is one of the world's least affordable cities.

With Guillermo del Toro’s recommendation, I started watching Apple TV ‘s “Widow’s Bay.” It’s so incredibly good that I couldn’t stop, so I binged through Episode 9 in one go. This horror-comedy, executive produced by Hiro Murai, is set in a cursed island town 40 miles off the coast of New England. Dense fog, violent storms, and all kinds of supernatural phenomena descend upon the town. It’s packed with horror elements, one after another. Fans of Stephen King and horror in general will love it. The pacing is excellent, and the balance between horror and humor is just right. Ironically, the mayor’s tireless efforts to attract tourists reminded me of Mayor Vaughn from “Jaws.” The townspeople are wonderfully eccentric as well, with personalities straight out of “Twin Peaks.” It’s been a long time since a series pulled me in this completely. I can’t wait for next Wednesday’s final episode.

All of these were reported over the past month: • A new pancreatic cancer drug, daraxonrasib, that roughly doubles survival in late-stage disease • A precision lung cancer drug, lorlatinib, that kept 55 percent of patients progression-free after 7 years, versus 3 percent on the old drug • A prostate cancer drug, talazoparib, that halves the risk of progression • An endometrial cancer drug, dostarlimab, where 58 percent of patients hadn't progressed after 4 years, versus 16 percent on chemo alone • An early-detection blood test, the NHS Galleri test, that quadrupled cancer detection but missed its main goal • An mRNA cancer vaccine that halved the risk of melanoma recurrence when added to Keytruda • The most effective weight loss drug so far, retatrutide, which cut body weight by about 28 percent • The first in vivo gene editing therapy, which cut hereditary angioedema attacks by 87 percent from a single injection • A one-time gene edit, VERVE-102, that lowered LDL cholesterol by 62 percent • A feat of pharmaceutical synthesis that raised enlicitide's manufacturing yield 14-fold using engineered enzymes • A functional cure for hepatitis B, bepirovirsen, that cleared the virus in about 20 percent of patients • The discovery that human cells can swap chromosome-sized DNA through nanotubes • An ancestor of CRISPR, VIPR, found in bacteriophages, that silences genes without cutting DNA • A preventive Covid-19 pill, ensitrelvir, that cut symptom risk by 67 percent after exposure • The first PROTAC drug, vepdegestrant, which destroys a disease-causing protein rather than blocking it Every month, Niko and I write a round up digging into the latest news in biotech and medicine, and this month's was astonishing. We share some thoughts on what's responsible for this progress and what it means for science in the future.
