ليس كل ما يُقال يستوجب الرد، إذ إن بعض الأقوال يكفي أن تُفهم في سياقها الصحيح ثم تُترك دون أن تُمنح أهمية تتجاوز قدرها الحقيقي. فالسفاهة غالبًا ما تهدف إلى استجلاب الانتباه أكثر من سعيها إلى إرساء حوار بنّاء، كما أنها تتغذى على الانفعالات وردود الأفعال المتعجلة، في حين تتجلى الحكمة في قدرة الإنسان على اختيار ما يتوافق مع قيمه ومكانته، لا ما يُفرض عليه. ومن يُدرك قيمة نفسه لا ينجرف إلى مستوى ينتقص من قدره مهما بلغت حدة الاستفزاز، بل يلتزم الصمت حين يكون أبلغ أثرًا، ويمضي في سبيله حين يكون الانشغال بالرد مضيعة للوقت والغاية. فليست كل مواجهة تُعد انتصارًا، بل إن الانتصار الحقيقي قد يتمثل في الثبات والاتزان دون الانخراط فيما لا يضيف غير أن هذا لا يعني أن الصمت هو القاعدة المطلقة في كل موقف، فهناك حالات يكون فيها الرد ضرورة عندما يتعلق الأمر بحق واضح أو تجاوز يؤثر على الآخرين أو يغيّر صورة غير صحيحة تُنقل للناس، لكن حتى في هذه الحالات لا يكون الرد اندفاعًا ولا انفعالًا، بل يكون بميزان العقل وبما يحقق الغاية دون أن يتحول إلى نزاع فارغ أو استنزاف للطاقة. فالمسألة ليست بين رد أو عدم رد بشكل عشوائي، وإنما بين وعي يحدد متى يكون الرد إصلاحًا ومتى يكون السكوت حفاظًا على النفس والمعنى، وبين إدراك أن لكل موقف حدوده التي يجب ألا يتجاوزها الإنسان حتى لا يخسر هدوءه في معارك لا تستحق أن تُمنح أكثر مما تستحق من وقت أو اهتمام.
