just wrapped 5y in Tokyo, thereβs an irony in that one of the most rules based societies allows just about anything when it comes to zoning and building.
Spaces that are unbelievably narrow or inaccessible or low ceilings, they just go with it, customers work it out.
My local cafe had roof beams that would hit you in the forehead if you donβt duck and it was a new build. Many restaurants had tight passages that requires guests to shufffle around each other. Basic but unimaginable in the west.
My home street had apartments, factories, a shipping depot, bakeries, shrines, a wine bar and retail all within 700ft of each other and this is more a residential area (kiyosumi).
So many thoughts to share, but Iβll note to start that the architecture is far more eclectic than even I thought it would be, the urbanism better, and idiosyncrasies burst from every seam
