This picture takes me back.
Thatâs
@bujubanton with one of his biggest fans â Kenyan superstar Hardstone (Mbaruku Harrison Ngunjiri Maina) â I took it in September 1997, when Buju came to Kampala to perform at Lugogo Cricket Oval.
Hardstone was on fire at the time. The man was selling out stadiums across Kenya, riding the wave of his smash hit Uhiki. He was untouchable.
What made this moment special for me is that I was managing Kawesa, who happened to be signed to the same label as Hardstone.
@davidmuriithi and the brilliant
@Teddjosiah were handling both artists out of Nairobi.
I made David and Tedd a deal â let me talk to
@TSbR_Bass, who had flown Buju in, and get Hardstone on that stage with his idol.
In return, I asked them to help release Kawesaâs music, songs like Ssemusajja Agenda and others.
They said yes. Tshaka said yes.
So Hardstone and his crew loaded up a gloriously pimped-out matatu and drove all the way down from Nairobi.
It was an unforgettable night. And somewhere in the crowd, a young
@BebeCoolUG took the stage for what I believe was one of his earliest performances â covering Bujuâs Love Dem Bad alongside a guy called Gentle.
