At the world’s largest cancer research meeting, data briefly took a backseat to grief. At every annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the congregation of oncologists scrutinizes data on survival and mortality. But comparatively few conversations focus on the loss that is inherent in the work of cancer doctors. That changed a bit this year. In his opening address, the organization’s outgoing president, Eric Small, spoke about his partner, University of California, San Francisco, oncologist Amy Lin, who passed away in December. She had metastatic clear cell ovarian cancer, a rare disease with few treatment options. Small also brought a different kind of specialist to ASCO’s mainstage: David Kessler, an expert on grief and loss, who gave a talk about compassionate end-of-life care. Today, we dive into a unique liver crisis emerging in the US. It's due to high rates of metabolic disease (obesity, type 2 diabetes) AND heavy alcohol use. That combo is driving disease in younger adults — many of whom have no clue. @statnews statnews.com/2026/05/13/live…

Read this @statnews reflection on scientist James Watson — written by the great Sharon Begley before her own tragic passing. Among other things, it's a testament to her incredible talent as a writer and as an observer of this world. statnews.com/2025/11/07/jame…

At the #StatusList dinner last night I was asked what I would change about our industry. My response: the likelihood of making it from discovery to FDA approval is ~1% & takes 10-15 yrs yet the incentives focus only on rewarding the successes w/ so much waste & lost knowledge. We need to find mechanisms to better share & recognize the learnings from the failures, whether they relate to clinical design/execution errors or learnings for a class of targets. What is one thing you would change about our industry?
