Forgive the sappy long post, but it's officially my 10th anniversary at Overclock Media. And it's got me in a reflecting mood.
When I started making my own tech videos in 2010 (while I was in high school), I didn't think it would alter the course of my life.
But it played a huge role in me pursuing/graduating film school, moving to SoCal from NYC, and eventually working my first (and still only) full time job with Overclock. Truth be told, it took awhile for it to feel... real.
However, together with
@austinnotduncan, we've been able to film some fun, once in a lifetime experiences that I'm proud to look back on. I mean, it's not often a day job has you filming in ZERO GRAVITY one day, then meeting F1 drivers another... then getting an exclusive hands-on of a next-gen console shortly after. Oh, and who could forget Mystery Tech and all the dumb stuff we've put on the company card 😅
Having a fun job is something I'm always thankful for and try not to take for granted.
But also I'm incredibly thankful for how much Austin has trusted me projects and responsibility over the years.
Like his willingness to let me find myself creatively by starting Denki (under the Overclock umbrella) - which has also been quite the journey over the last 4 years.
We got to 250K subs not too long ago, and I still find it crazy that people (every now and then) come up to me... FOR MY OWN CHANNEL. If you've watched and especially if you're still watching - thank you!
But also, job isn't just "the art" - but also in the things that viewers don't see. Officially within Overclock, I'm a VP Creative Director in a company of 12... and turns out helping with day to day operations isn't always about production 😂
I'll always see myself as a creator before a manager, but training both muscles have been equally important in mentally grounding the work we do.
Like, it's crazy to me that Austin and I used to be just two dudes working out of a work/live loft till midnight.
But then we hired more people, I had to learn how to install a timecard system... and years later even through a pandamic... it's a full blown operation with employees, OUR OWN BUILDING, freaking health insurance and 401K's... and running almost exclusively 9AM-5PM (work/life balance is key!)
Film school might have not prepped me on business management, but I've definitely come to appreciate knowing what goes into it... especially to see the value in balancing art and sustainability.
More than anything, my 10 years at Overclock has been incredibly fulfilling so far, and I'm thankful the company has had my back to help me grow.
If you've seen our stuff before, thanks for watching. And I hope you'll continue to support the stuff we make.
