A bombshell new report by the Parliamentary Budget Office has confirmed that Victorians are now being slugged more than anywhere in the country for its fire services. Under Labor, Victoria now collects $221 in emergency levy revenue per resident a year, $43 above the national average of $177 per person, and the highest in Australia. The state budget figures show the ESVF is expected to collect $1.6bn in 2026–27, rising to $1.8bn a year from 2027–28 onwards. Businesses are hit even higher with commercial rates more than doubling in some cases as a result of the ESL. The state government has previously said the levy was necessary to properly fund emergency services yet we see our fire services under funded and under performing.
