NYT bestselling author of HOUSE OF HOLLOW and CHEMICAL HEARTS. This is now a News & Updates account only. I’m still active on Instagram @km_sutherland.
BREAKING NEWS ALERT 🚨 The wonderful @lilireinhart is playing Grace Town in the movie adaptation of #ChemicalHearts - and the project is ALREADY SHOOTING in New Jersey! Guys, this movie is going to be BEAUTIFUL. google.com/amp/s/deadline.co…
It means so much! I arrived in the UK three years ago and instantly felt so welcomed by the book community here. It's such an honour. I've read THE YEARBOOK and ACE OF SPADES and AFTERLOVE - I want to read them all! #YABookPrize
Another question for both of you @adiba_j@km_sutherland - what does it mean to be shortlisted for the prize and have you read any of the other books on the list? #YABookPrize
I love the first draft - nothing is wrong yet. There are no mistakes in a first draft! It's just you discovering the story. As things get more granular, I enjoy the process less. Copyedits is the least enjoyable - there it feels like everything is wrong!
It felt like coming home! Before writing Chemical Hearts, I wrote 3 (unpublished) manuscripts that were all fantasy or sci-fi. House of Hollow felt like returning to my roots and what I really loved to write. #YABookPrize
This sounds great! House of Hollow was a change in direction compared to your previous YA novels - what prompted you to write a gothic fairy tale? Was it challenging to write in a different genre? #YABookPrize
Good evening everyone! Welcome to our Twitter chat with @adiba_j and @km_sutherland, who are both shortlisted for the YA Book Prize 2022 with Hani and Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating and House of Hollow 🥳 Please join in and ask your questions using the hashtag #YABookPrize
I relate the most to Iris because she's the most normal. Your protagonist kind of has to be the most accessible character in order for the reader to connect with the story. My favourite to write was Grey, a woman with terrible, unchecked power #YABookPrize
I know this is a question for Adiba, but I'm going to chime in as well because tropes are so fun! My next book has elements of enemies to lovers and there's only one bed - tropes I love to read and have always wanted to try! #YABookPrize
#YABookPrize@adiba_j Hani and Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating focusses on the 'fake dating' trope. Is there another trope you'd like to try? If so, what would it be? @yabookprize
The three sisters in House of Hollow came to me immediately, on that first day. I'm one of three girls and had always wanted to write about the bond between sisters - plus three sisters going missing has a very fairytale feel to it #YABookPrize
The ruined door that inspired House of Hollow. I arrived at Anuradhapura having no idea what my next project would be and left a few hours later with an idea feverishly swirling in my brain. #YABookPrize
I had more input on this design than I did for my previous covers. My publishing house invited me to send a mood board of ideas, which included some artwork from Aykut Aydoğdu (@aykutmaykut on Instagram). His work really captured the book so well #YABookPrize
Hello Adiba and Krystal! Congratulations on being shortlisted for the #YABookPrize! I've read Hani and Ishu and really enjoyed it. I've yet to read House of Hollow- the cover is so intriguing.
House of Hollow was first sparked on a trip to Sri Lanka's ancient capital, Anuradhapura. There were ruins where every part of the structure had fallen away except for the doorframe. I wondered - what would happen if those doors led somewhere unexpected?
Hi @adiba_j and @km_sutherland, thanks for joining us tonight! Our first question for you both is - what inspired your shortlisted novels? #YABookPrize
