Maryna Viazovska (2 December 1984) is a Ukrainian mathematician and professor at the Γcole Polytechnique FΓ©dΓ©rale de Lausanne.
She received the Fields Medal in 2022.
Her major achievement was solving the sphere packing problem in dimensions 8 and 24 in 2016, proving that the E8 lattice and Leech lattice give the densest packings in those dimensions. This resolved a long-standing problem in geometry and Fourier analysis.
Viazovskaβs work connects modular forms, sphere packing, and energy minimization. She continues research in Fourier analysis and discrete geometry
