ALT A wedge of once unexplored darkness between the Span’s two brightest arms. Ignored by the Authority due to the lack of stars, it became a point of interest as the Conglomerates grew bolder. Probes revealed that dozens of rogue exoplanets occupied the space, locked in a synchronized orbit around the Span’s core. Initial exploration confirmed that the region’s proximity to the Mist meant many of these planets were in a star-less Goldilocks zone; entirely habitable and hiding in the darkness. Lucien Dilus, owner of the bespoke terraforming megacorp Sylux, saw it as the perfect opportunity to carve out his own empire within the Authority’s borders. Colonization was fast. Most of the planets in the region were perfectly habitable, with thriving ecosystems and even sparse evidence of previous inhabitants. Millions of hopefuls fled the Ring, seeking a promised heaven in the empty space of the Span. 5 years after first settlement, the planets were tomb worlds.
