I welcomed the Prime Minister of Ireland,
@MichealMartinTD, for bilateral talks in Budapest.
History and our shared love of freedom connect the Hungarian and Irish peoples. I expressed my gratitude to Ireland for providing refuge to the many Hungarians who fled the country after the 1956 Revolution, and I was pleased to note that the Hungarian community remains an active part of Irish society today.
We reviewed the priorities of the upcoming Irish EU Presidency, as well as the key issues that will shape the future of the European Union. Hungary supports strengthening competitiveness and preserving cohesion and the Common Agricultural Policy, and believes in European cooperation based on dialogue and compromise.
I informed the Prime Minister about the agreement reached on the EU funds due to Hungary, as well as the progress achieved regarding the rights of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia.
I thank Micheál Martin for the constructive discussion and wish him every success with the Irish EU Presidency and in his future work.
Long live Hungarian–Irish friendship!
