President Ruto: We are correcting the negative profiling of certain communities — the unjust notion that specific positions are reserved for certain people while excluding others. This is not only an injustice but a stigma on entire communities.

UPDATE: Wajir South MP Mohamed Adow has sparked a renewed debate on equitable teacher deployment and access to quality education in Northern Kenya during Uhuru Kenyatta presidency, particularly focusing on the critical period between 2018 and 2022. "Education in Northeastern Kenya under the Uhuru Kenyatta administration needs to be investigated. Actually, it is a research topic. That policy needs to be studied as a subject," Adow said during an interview on Kulan Podcast. He continued: "If you want to harm a society, make sure they don't get educated... How can you transfer 5,000 teachers from Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa in one go, and the head of the TSC says 'welcome to Kenya'?"

CS Duale Announces Upgrade of Balambala Hospital to Level 5 Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has announced that Balambala Sub-County Hospital will be upgraded to a Level 5 facility to expand access to specialized healthcare in Garissa County and the wider North Eastern region. CS Duale made the announcement during an inspection tour of the project, where he assessed the progress of construction. He said the 150-bed hospital is about 70 per cent complete and will serve as a major referral centre once operational. The Cabinet Secretary noted that the upgraded facility will offer specialized outpatient and inpatient services. It will also provide surgical care, maternity and newborn services, as well as enhanced diagnostic capabilities. He said the expansion will reduce the need for residents to travel long distances in search of advanced medical treatment in one of Kenya’s historically underserved regions. Duale reaffirmed the national government’s commitment to equitable healthcare access. He added that the project supports the broader goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage through sustained investment in health infrastructure. The CS urged the contractor to maintain quality standards and complete the project on schedule. He also said the hospital is awaiting formal commissioning by President William Ruto once construction is finalized. Garissa County Executive Committee Member for Health Ahmednadhir Omar and other local leaders accompanied Duale during the inspection.

CS Duale calls for swift action against knife-wielding gangs terrorising Garissa town  By: Nimah Abdi GARISSA — Cabinet Secretary for Health Aden Duale has called on security agencies to act swiftly against youthful gangs behind a series of stabbing and robbery incidents that have instilled fear among residents in Garissa Town. Speaking during a tour of Balambala Constituency,  Garissa County on Saturday, Duale condemned the rising violence, describing it as unacceptable, and urged the swift prosecution of perpetrators to restore public safety and confidence. “Violence remains unacceptable, and I therefore urged the swift prosecution of those responsible,” Duale said. The remarks come amid growing public outrage over knife-wielding gangs, often operating on motorbikes, who have been robbing residents at knifepoint and carrying out brazen daylight attacks. Recent incidents include the fatal stabbing of a 25-year-old United States citizen of Somali descent in Bula Mzuri area, as well as attacks on other residents, such as Ahmed Adan, who was stabbed multiple times along Forest Road after resisting a phone snatch. Local leaders and residents have repeatedly raised concerns about the gangs, many linked to areas like Bula Iftin and Garissa Ndogo, demanding stronger security intervention to curb the wave of crime.

UPDATE: Former White House national security official Olivia Troye has criticised the Trump administration’s decision to bar Somali FIFA referee Omar Artan from entering the United States ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In a post on X, Troye, who served under Vice President Mike Pence, raised concerns over the consistency of the U.S. vetting process. “As someone who has worked on national security vetting, the Trump Admin barring Somali referee Omar Artan entry to the US for the World Cup leads to more questions than answers,” she wrote. “Omar was vetted, approved, and issued a visa. Then he landed in the United States and was suddenly deemed a national security threat. So which is it?”

OPINION: "President William Ruto’s recent three-day development tour of Wajir County was, by every measure, historic. For the first time in our national memory, the centre of power moved with seriousness, symbolism and substance into the heart of Northern Kenya. "But in the middle of this historic inclusion, one constituency stood painfully outside the circle. Wajir North was not simply missed. Wajir North was symbolically erased." UPDATE: Hillary Clinton has criticized the U.S. government for denying entry to Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who was set to become the first Somali official at the 2026 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In a post on X, the former US Secretary of State stated: “As a World Cup host, the U.S. shouldn't be flippantly barring officials from entering the country to do their jobs. It's terribly backward. It's also counterproductive. Global sports competitions should improve international exchange and relations, not the reverse.” Artan was turned away at Miami International Airport over vetting concerns despite being on FIFA’s official list, prompting backlash and raising questions about balancing security with sports diplomacy.

Celebrated Somali referee Omar Artan denied US entry while travelling to Miami for 2026 World Cup MIAMI, U.S.— Acclaimed Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, named Africa’s Best Referee for 2025, was denied entry into the United States and deported to Istanbul upon arrival at Miami International Airport. Artan was among the 52 referees announced by FIFA to officiate at the June-July World Cup finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Artan, 34, was travelling for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His journey was facilitated by the Somali Embassy in Nairobi, which had issued him a diplomatic passport to address visa-related challenges. Somalia remains on the US travel ban list. The denial comes amid recent remarks by President Donald Trump, who last month described Somali immigrants in America as “all crooks” and in January called Somalia “the worst country in the world.” Artan received the prestigious Confederation of African Football (CAF) Best Referee award in November 2025. FIFA Reactions FIFA has not yet issued an official public statement on the incident. However, the Somali Football Federation has appealed to the world governing body for urgent intervention as the tournament approaches. Somali sports officials have strongly criticised the decision, with one senior advisor describing it as undermining “football’s commitment to fairness, merit, and the spirit of fair play.”
