What a pleasure to host 64 @Harvard students & professors from 24 countries in Nigeria & have them visit the @Slum2School Innovation Hub. But that is not the story. One Thursday evening in April of 2022, as we prepared for our final exams at Harvard, myself & other African & American students were reflecting on our experiences. "Will you go back to Nigeria after graduation?" an American friend asked me. "Off course I will." I replied her. "You should come & visit. Nigeria is a beautiful country" I said excitedly. An African among us, rebuffed me saying "it wasn't safe for foreigners to visit Nigeria." I was visibly offended.  "How isn't Nigeria safe?" I asked rhetorically. We all got into very heated argument. "We are in the United states where people go missing & get kidnapped daily. Where over 21,000 people were killed by gun violence in 2021.  Where two mass shootings happened daily throughout 2021. Where the police kill unarmed citizens. Do these stop foreigners from visiting? Inspite of that, Americans say America is the greatest country." I continued. "Yes we have our challenges as a fragile democracy, but Nigerians are some of the most hospitable people in the world"  Nigerians are very hardworking, loving, friendly to foreigners & the world should experience this!" We ended the argument with everyone saying "Yes we will love to visit Nigeria & Africa" So, when I learned that a delegation of 64 students and professors from @Kennedy_School, @HarvardHBS & @hgse were visiting Nigeria during the election week, I was excited. The delegation from Cambridge just visited Lagos & the Harvard Alumni Association of Nigeria hosted them to fabulous dinner. Afterwards, I & my team hosted them at the @Slum2School Innovation Hub & many of them came to me saying, "Otto I didn't imagine having such an experience. I am so inspired that I want to come back". My final message to Nigerians & Africans is that, we are ambassadors of our nations & our continent. If we don't tell our true stories, we'll be forced to let others tell a false narrative about us.
