Years ago, @jillstewart took a chance on me as a freelancer at LAWeekly, where I wrote two cover stories. Today at #JACC2023, she advises new journalists that getting those clips in professional outlets as a freelancer or intern is the best way to launch their careers.
There’s getting it right, and there’s getting it right, @tbray explains at #JACC2023. You need to be sure the names and numbers are correct, but you also need to get the bigger impact, or meaning, of the story right.

NEWS: On May 30, a coalition of journalists, journalism educators and press advocates sent the following letter to @LACityCollege and @laccd leaders protesting reports of a culture of censorship faced by student journalists on campus.

Would these folks deny access to an LA Times reporter if they wanted to cover and event or game? It's the Collegian's job to cover @LACityCollege. Access matters. #Pressfreedom matters.
After a student reporter was kicked out of a LACC music event, another reporter writing a follow-up took photos inside the music blding & had campus police, who are L.A. Sheriffs, called on him. Music staff said he made them feel "unsafe and threatened."

Here is how quick these photos have to move on a news wire. APs image was taken at 11:29 and sent over the wire at 11:36. The Reuters image was most likely taken at the same time and moved at 11:43. An AP image is front of @nytimes@washingtonpost & @latimes speed is HUGE.
Which is better? (Hint: one of them is the official new #NYC tourism logo and the other is the one independent artist Ryan McGinnis created because everyone hated the official one.) nytimes.com/2023/03/21/nyreg…

The Stylebook also recommends using a mix of identity-first language (homeless people) and person-first language (people who are homeless) if the preference of an individual or group can't be determined.
Her questions certainly raised eyebrows, but #BarbaraWalters knew how to create a hit program while still speaking truth to power. She showed the world that, yes, women can be news anchors, news hounds, and hard-hitting roving reporters. nytimes.com/2022/12/30/arts/…
