Yet another reason to be skeptical about claims that social media use (SM) causes mental health (MH) problems: turns out that both share common genetic underpinnings.

In other words, young people who are genetically predisposed toward developing MH problems may also be predisposed to spending a lot of time on SM.
This study was of 22 year olds. Perhaps genetically informed studies of younger samples can replicate these analyses with teens.
