A Thread on Handwritingโ€ฆ Over the past 2 years, I have paid more attention to the way handwriting is taught than at any other point in my career. Handwriting seemed a fairly simple thing that pupils would just pick up with a few lessons on letter formation. I was wrong! Here are some things I think about now that I didnโ€™t always consider beforeโ€ฆ

When people say behaviour management is about โ€˜building relationshipsโ€™, thereโ€™s some truth to that, but itโ€™s *how* to build relationships that trainees need to know. Without that, itโ€™s useless advice. Not wrong, just useless.

Teachers often think they have higher standards than they do. Teachers with low standards undermine their colleagues. I understand why they might lower standards. Itโ€™s to survive in environment where kids in control. But lowering standards never the answer.

Was going to write a to-do list in prep for my SENDCO time tomorrow but decided to do a reverse - a โ€œwhat Iโ€™ve already done listโ€. Amazing for my well-being to see how far Iโ€™ve come in 6 weeks ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผโ™ฅ๏ธ we need to focus on what we have done rather than whatโ€™s still to do sometimes!

*Leadership* โ€˜The standard you walk past is the standard you acceptโ€™ This is so important for all levels of leadership in schools. Model this to colleagues when walking the school When leaders accept standards against the school expectations it weakens the culture

The idea that ' we shouldn't ask students questions because it will provoke anxiety' assumes that students cannot cope with being asked things, which makes it more likely they never learn to cope with it.

Task completion is a poor proxy for learning; this is something I wished I'd known in my early years of teaching. Here is a one-pager I have created for @PepsMccrea, summarising his notion of Backwards Planning.
