We test our hypotheses using election manifestos (1990–2019) and public opinion data for Austria. The findings show that parties use group appeals to reinforce their strengths and respond to voter priorities.
By strategically combining policy issues with group appeals, parties can effectively communicate their platform, connect with diverse social groups, and shape voter perceptions of representation and responsiveness.
I’m thrilled to see this paper (with @ThomasMMeyer & @MarkusWagnerAT) finally published online @The_JOP! We show that social group appeals serve as simple cues for voters, shaping their opinions on policies based on appeal valence and group affect.

While these appeals serve as potent rhetorical tools for political actors, they can deepen policy disagreements among the public and may also strengthen group stereotypes.
New dataset alert! 📊 @DrAlonaDolinsky, @Rwillh11 and I have created a new dataset containing the cleaned, content-verified, natural sentences of party manifestos from the UK, Ireland, and Germany for 1970 – 2021! Spread the word and use it!
