PEARLL is closing. The federal grant program that has supported PEARLL since 2018 has been defunded for the current cycle and seems unlikely to receive funding again soon. Therefore, unfortunately, PEARLL needs to close.

I get tired of black folks falling into white talking points about who is and isn’t black. Because there were only two fountains!!! And Kamala would NOT be drinking from the White one. BE SERIOUS RIGHT NOW.

You know what I realized today? We haven’t truly had a joyful, naturally funny, quick to laugh President since Obama. I’m talking a POTUS who breaks out in belly laughs and is truly a joyous person. I’m thinking more and more that may be VP Harris’ secret weapon. We need some joy.

With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.

By the time the Court decides how much or how little king-like immunity Trump & future presidents will enjoy, everyone who hasn’t been asleep for the past 6 months will know it has granted Trump the indefensible gift of immunity by sheer delay. That the Court doesn’t care what We the People think about that dishonest strategy bespeaks a boundless arrogance that should embolden efforts at enlarging the Court, imposing term limits, creating enforceable ethics rules, and requiring greater transparency.

'NOT a proud moment for this Virginia (yeah, the Commonwealth in which I live) school district. This is one of the most cruel and unnecessary moves they could make -- And worth condemnation. This is not "honoring our heritage" as they claim. It's legitimizing/normalizing callous white superiority and the enslaving, raping, and murdering of millions of individuals. Shenandoah schools, you can be better than this! Reverse this decision. bbc.com/news/world-us-canada…

Thread: Want to think out loud about what I've seen and experienced since joining NPR a few years ago. I was hired during NPR's "North Star" era when diversity was established as a priority. I'm an aging rural white man (58 years old). Never graduated college. Didn't see NYC...1/

The last American slave ship docked illegally in Mobile, Alabama, in 1860, carrying about 160 West African captives. Among them was Cudjo Lewis, who recognized how his birth culture might be erased while toiling in this new land. So when he was freed, he purchased two acres and started a self-sufficient community of survivors of the last slave ship. Known to outsiders as Africatown, Lewis' neighborhood was modeled on his West African home, where extended families lived together, members conversed in their regional languages, and partook in traditions that might otherwise be lost to them in America. Today, Africatown still exists and houses the descendants of the nation's last slave ship community.

“I was just being myself” is not an excuse for disrespectful behavior. It signals a lack of concern for others. Authenticity without empathy is selfish. Authenticity without boundaries is careless. Being true to yourself shouldn’t come at the expense of being kind to others.

When I was a little boy, the Japanese military attacked Pearl Harbor. It was a surprise attack, and thousands of U.S. servicemembers perished. As a nation, we were stunned. And we vowed to strike back. Revenge was understandably on everyone’s mind, including many Americans of Japanese descent who opposed the emperor and were peaceful and law-abiding U.S. citizens and residents. In its zeal to exact that revenge, however, the U.S. government overreacted, out of fear and bigotry. They targeted everyone who happened to look like the people who had carried out the attack. Those of us who had done nothing wrong were forced to pay the consequences for the decisions of others far away and disconnected from us. We were interned for years, in open-air prisons, while America went off to fight Japan, Germany and Italy. It’s so important that we carry the lessons of the past through to today. Merely because one group commits atrocities and acts with depravity does not mean vast hundreds of thousands or even millions of others should be lumped together with them and made to suffer. We must never paint with the brush of justice and retaliation too broadly, or the toll of human suffering will rise immeasurably.

Learning to repair as an adult is one of the most important skills. It shows we’re accountable and we respect the feelings of those around us. HOW TO REPAIR: 1. Listen to what someone is saying without getting defensive or deflecting. 2. Notice if something they’re saying is valid or something you didn’t see in yourself. 3. Be empathetic and apologize for hurting them. This builds trust and emotional intimacy. RETWEET FOR AWARENESS.

Trigger warnings are not effective. 24 studies, 7k people: alerts about upsetting content don't prevent distress or promote learning. All they do is raise anxiety. The best way to shield mental health isn't to sound an alarm beforehand. It's to make support available afterward.
