A stunning new portrait of the Obamas by Njideka Akunyili Crosby has been unveiled at the Obama Presidential Center. Look closely at the incredible details woven throughout the artwork, including numerous individual photographs, many of which may feel familiar. As Michelle Obama shared, “Her artistic brilliance shines through, and the way she brought so much life and joy to this piece is truly extraordinary. We love it, and we believe everyone who visits the Center will too.”

My vision for putting in place The Satoshi Hub was to enable Bitcoin adoption in better ways than having to seat people in a class. The first method we’ve adopted is Dance Bitcoin. To attend the Dance Class, you must pay in Bitcoin. Short Answer: It works! Thanks @bitcoin_muk, @NowarugabaG @afansabila @daudi_bakka x.com/bitcoin_muk/status/206…

📊 Current Situation: Uganda has recorded 19 Ebola cases. 14 cases are from the Democratic Republic of Congo and belong to the same family. 📉 Positive Signs: No new Ebola case had been reported for five days at the time of the Presidential address. This suggests that containment efforts may be yielding results. ✅ Uganda Has Defeated Epidemics Before: Successfully fought HIV/AIDS, COVID-19, and previous Ebola outbreaks.

UGANDA TOURISM The last 6yrs have been hardest year for me in my tourism life and yes, we have had covid, Ebola but management of information has failed us! Tourism had also attracted many young educated Ugandans and they were starting to see results, I mentor some so I know and more were coming board. I don’t know about those that indirectly benefit from tourism who are so many and many of them don’t even know they do by the way. It’s not about disease outbreaks, it’s just been how information has been handled, if you follow me, you can see the efforts i invest in and yes, many others do! After 6yrs, this year the few accommodations have gone up to about 70% and within 2 days of announcement, we had moved from 70% to 30% and kept reducing. Uganda already has very few accommodations but even the few, owners are struggling with loans and all sorts of bills across board. Nothing has killed the entrepreneurs spirit especially in tourism like information handling by the ministry of health. And it’s more about how information is put out there! No country succeeds with a dampened spirit of entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs make the economy and everything rotates around how the economy functions. Me who knows about regional business and also understand our potential as a people and a country sometimes, it’s hard very hard. Because of 2 planting seasons we casually say, oh we shall get over it. What keeps us backwards are things we can handle better according to me. If don’t travel, you will never get to see even in our neighborhood how much business those guys do and you know what, they aren’t any better than us! I interact with them, I can tell they aren’t any better than us. Many tell me, Amos you are operating in a small environment, you can do better elsewhere. Then you ask yourself, who else will improve Uganda if am not one of them?

Mama Nike was one of 15 wives. When she left her husband to make art, the other 14 wives chose to follow her... Artist Nike Davies Okundaye - better known as Mama Nike - grew up in an area of Nigeria where polygamous marriages were common. Her own father had three wives. The women in her family were makers of traditional adire cloth. From the age of six, Mama Nike's great grandmother, mother, and aunt taught her how to spin, weave and dye. "I didn't know it was my own future food," says Mama Nike - because, despite her family's craft, money was scarce. At the age of 13, her father decided to marry her off to someone who already had several wives. But her great grandmother wanted her to choose her own marriage - and so did Mama Nike. She escaped from the men who had come to take her away, and trekked for five days back to her village. "It's the biggest risk I ever took," she says. "I didn't care if I died." She arrived home exhausted and covered in bee stings. Even so, her father tried to marry her off again. This time, Mama Nike ran away and joined a travelling theatre, until police arrested her and brought her back. Eventually, she agreed to marry a well-known artist and musician from Oshogbo, a town renowned for its artistic community. She used her sewing and embroidery skills to make costumes for her husband's band - while trying to make her own art. "The men didn't want a woman to be an artist. So, I worked in the night, and worked for them in the day," she says. Her husband went on to marry 14 other women. Tradition demanded those who were already wives accept each new marriage - but Mama Nike says they didn't always want to. On one occasion, the husband took the women to a church where they were denied food, water, or access to their children. Mama Nike says she was forced to agree to her husband marrying an addition woman: "By the third day we said, 'Bring the wife, we're not jealous anymore.' Our mouths were like boards - dry,". She says living with her husband made her feel "like a lion with no teeth. You have no power." She began to teach her co-wives traditional adire making skills, and soon, each of them was able to make their own money. Sick of her husband's control and abuse, Mama Nike left him as soon as she'd saved enough to buy her own place - and the other wives chose to follow her. She opened her first formal gallery in Oshogbo in 1986. She is now an internationally renowned artist, with a huge gallery in Lagos where she teaches others and makes her own colourful, beautiful art. 🎧 Outlook: bbc.in/4v9xBcM Copied from at BBC world service
