Delighted to receive my copy of The Story of the Herefordshire Pomona, surely the most beautiful publication ever produced about the county and its orchards. A exquisite tribute by Bill Laws, published by @LogastonPress. Many thanks, the perfect antidote to hateful politics...

Norman fonts in Herefordshire are cut as drums, and will often have a bold pictorial design that tells a coherent story that will be a mystery to a modern viewer. A high point can be seen at Eardisley that is mysteriously decorated with a mass of fronds, knotwork and tendrils that clear around an image of Christ, his cross planted securely in the ground as he fights to haul Adam out from hell –  that is represented by more of the tendrils that loop around his legs. Behind him, a gigantic lion-like creature forms another part of the hellscape. The other side, shows two men fighting each other and the entanglement with spears, wearing Norman helmets in what looks like their pyjamas. You can read more about Norman Fonts in my book - Church Going, out in October. Deets 👇
