Honest opinion: I don't understand the hate for trigger warnings in books. Especially for heavy content like SA and self-harm. I'd never close a book because it has a content warning. But I've reached the point where I'm sick of reading s3xu@l @ssu@lt scenes. I might push through if I went in with some warning. But if you drop one on me from left field, I'm out. Not wanting to relive certain experiences strikes me as a perfectly acceptable reason for choosing some books over others. Or not reading certain genres at all. But when did a whole generation of authors get convinced they're necessary for a story to feel real? These scenes seem to slip in EVERYWHERE, dropped into narratives like bizarre afterthoughts. Who convinced us those who prefer otherwise are "weak" or "woke"? I don't buy it. This isn't about "strength" or "politics." I don't even think it's about "empathy." It's about respect. You don't have to agree with my preferences. But there's something wildly disrespectful in dropping a bomb like that in your story, then labeling critics as weak for wishing they'd had a heads-up. Whatever culture teaches that kind of arrogance (disguised as strength and "realism") isn't one I want to be a part of.
