Had a great morning talking to Connie on BBC Radio Scotland, all about accents. You can listen to the full slot to hear all about people’s experiences (9am), and I make an appearance from around 1030 onwards. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/live/b…

This is in light with the new film directed by James McAvoy, California Schemin’. Where two Scottish rappers ditch and pretend to be a Californian duo to make it in the rap world. It is great to see accents, and accent bias being spoken about more frequently.

I can now officially say I've completed data collection for my PhD! Ending it with 76 participants for my eye-tracking experiment. A lot of eyeballs and organisation in the making. A momentary sigh of relief before onto the next stage, analysis time!

Had a great time at #UKLVC15, held at @LancasterUni. I presented my research that looked at using large-scale corpora and real-time methods to model non-linear trajectories of sound change, and explore any social relevance for these significant timepoints of change. (1)

It was lovely to present my work amongst such a supportive group of researchers, and to also hear about the exciting work going on across the spectrum of language variation and change. Thanks again to the organisers for a fantastic time!

This week I took part in the annual #SGSAH symposium, where I was an interviewee for a live academic job interview. Really grateful for the experience and hoping it was helpful to onlookers as much as it was me!

A different break away from the PhD this Easter, in the form of trekking the Sahara and tagine in the Atlas mountains. It was great to make new friends & to turn off for a while. Now feeling rested and ready to get back to my research, armed with my Moroccan mint tea!

We welcomed Rebecca Starr for this week's #GULPLabLunch. In a fascinating talk, she explored style commodification in China's enregisterment-rich social media. Looking at 'fizzy voice', 'clip voice' and 'ASMR' (1/2)

Today we were treated to an in person #GULPLabLunch by Ruohan from @ucl on his research. In a beautifully sophisticated experimentalndwsign, Ruohan explored style variation in L2 speakers English due to perceived listener characteristics, such as ethnicity. 谢谢 🙌🧠

🚀We have lift off! It was great to finally test out my current eye tracking experiment and pull through some data to make sure all is working fine, and for a few more tweaks to be made. A little PhD win to keep me going. And thanks to @JanetCoulson for lending her eyeball!

Could your accent make you sound guilty? A new study from @MMLL_Cambridge @JesusCollegeCam @NottmTrentUni shows that British people still associate accents perceived as ‘working-class’ with criminal behaviour. @alicepaver from @CamPhonLab explains 👇

And that's a wrap for the Christmas holidays 🎄🎅 Ended on a high with getting my pilot eye-tracking study off the ground today! This included all my 'spliced & diced' speaker stimuli, and extracted time points for the gaze analysis 👀 Excited for the break with loved ones ✌️
