A stunning photograph from 2014 by Murdo MacLeod for the @guardian. The image is of our own Frazer Capie with the @GovanStones Viking-Age hogbacks from the lost early-medieval Brittonic Kingdom of Strathclyde.

screw a fast and effective train. let's reinvent transportation instead screw saving our planet from predictable, preventable, manmade climate change. let's send a spaceship to Mars instead pie-in-the-sky ideas for an imaginary future prevent us from solving today's problems
Well, it served its purpose. Which was to shut down investments in or the building of high speed rail in California. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Billions of people around the globe celebrate the birthday of a Palestinian man, born in Bethlehem 2000 years ago, but don't think Palestinians lived there before 1948.

While I pray for their safe return, the chances are far higher of them being killed by Israeli airstrikes than them getting raped by Hamas. This is based on testimonials of released hostages who said they were treated humanely and even protected by their captors

All my Egyptian friends are tweeting about #Gaza. None are tweeting about the #Egypt election. Telling.

Reporting and publishing information — no matter where it comes from — is the right of a free press. The charges and gag order against Atmore News reporter Don Fletcher and publisher Sherry Digmon are past due to be dropped. s2.washingtonpost.com/3bec07…

Couldn't have the roman empire today. Because of wokeness. They'd have to have a teenage transgender syrian as emperor . . . wait . . . I am hearing reports . . . they did in fact have a teenage transgender syrian as emperor

To those who say I bring "shame" to Arabs and Muslims, It's not the psychopaths who rape women in Sweden who bring shame to Arabs and Muslims. It's not the terrorists who murder journalists in France who bring shame to Arabs and Muslims. It's not the maniacs who praise terrorists in the U.S. and the UK who bring shame to Arabs and Muslims. It's not the fascists who burn down embassies in Iraq who bring shame to Arabs and Muslims. It's not the psychos who kill their daughters and sisters for taking off the hijab who bring shame to Arabs and Muslims. It's not the beasts who hurls homosexuals off buildings who bring shame to Arabs and Muslims. It's me typing on my keyboard or talking to the camera, telling Arabs and Muslims: "Our culture needs to change," and "Killing Jews is not okay," who brings shame to Arabs and Muslims. Fascinating.

The lesson from the Holocaust is not to center Jewish fear at all times, it is the moral mandate to intervene against injustice & persecution even when the dominating narrative & power structure deems an entire community not human enough to deserve life & dignity

“It’s beyond anything that I’ve seen in my career,” Marc Garlasco...a former senior intelligence analyst at the Pentagon. To find a historical comparison for so many large bombs in such a small area, he said, we may “have to go back to Vietnam, or the Second World War.”

If someone takes a photo of Santa reading my book, especially the chapter about him, I'm going to freak out. Please make it happen, even if it results in me ending up on the naughty list ;)

“When Enki rises, the fish rise with him as waves…he can be as awe-inspiring as the sea, he can raise fear like a mighty river.” We end both our watery week and our month-long weekly exploration of Babylonian gods with Enki, the Babylonian god of water, wisdom, and crafts.

19th c historians: the new movie got bayonets fixed wrong and forgot the Italy campaign, which makes it a bad portrayal of military history Prehistorians: Ancient Aliens robs Indigenous people of credit for their monuments and leads some people to conspiracy theories
And now, the nit-picky history details/battle thread. TL;DR Ridley Scott's Napoleon movie is probably, in all seriousness, worse for Napoleonic Warfare than The Patriot is for eighteenth-century warfare. I'm going to focus on military history here in this one. 1/25
