Of US PhDs granted in 2021 who had employment commitments: 36% were headed to academe 43% were headed to industry 8% were headed to government 7% were headed to non-profits Think continuing in academia is the default path for PhDs? Think again. Data: ncses.nsf.gov/pubs/nsf23300/…

It hurts to get a grant rejection with positive science reviews, negatives citing lack of productivity. Lab opened in 2018, baby in 2018, COVID 2020-current ( two kids), my dad died in 2021. That plus papers in review forever ( 1yr); why do you think publishing is slow?

During my academic exit, I waited a year before starting to apply for industry roles. Why? Because I hadn't given myself *permission* to leave academia. Once I did, I landed an industry role within 3 months. Be kinder to yourself than I was. Give yourself permission to explore.
