Is it time for we in Ireland to have a conversation about a form of voluntary military service? Many of our European neighbours already have including Finland, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Greece, Austria, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania and Switzerland.
While France, Germany, Croatia, Poland, Belgium, Netherlands are moving towards variations on a voluntary system. So why not Ireland? The benefits include greater military security, national pride, a sense of purpose, discipline, and camaraderie.

I have only immense pride and admiration for my Al Jazeera colleagues who keep truth alive. Take a moment to watch Israelās failed attempts to silence Al Jazeeraās coverage of Gaza aje.io/5me46t via @AJEnglish
It was an honour to attend a demonstration to condemn the assassination in Gaza of Al Jazeera colleagues, correspondent Ismail al Ghoul and cameraman Rami al Rifi. Both men were killed while doing their job. Both were aged just 27. May they rest in peace.

Back in Ireland for a short break from work in Qatar. Took a calming morning walk today in the forest in my home village in Kildare. Bluebells in bloom in the spring. Makes you want to write a poem...
1/2 A moment of your time for @MohammedSawwaf ā If you don't know him, he has just won a prestigious RTS award for an Al Jazeera documentary 'Rescue Mission Gaza'. While producing this film, Israeli attacks killed at least 46 of Mohammad Sawwafās family members.
2/2 Mohammad was badly injured and still needs medical care. Please RT his photo, taken in happier times, to highlight the important work of the small numbers of brave journalists and filmmakers who risk their lives reporting from Gaza. youtube.com/watch?v=eZmhTOs-ā¦

My colleagues in @ajlabs have produced a list of the 10,000 children killed in the War on Gaza. Each a real boy or girl.
I spoke this week to friends that I visited in Bethlehem some months ago. It's a busy town in the occupied territories and normally Christmas is a time of celebration. But not this year. Watch and share this Al Jazeera report aje.io/sxfzwj?update=2536787 via @AJEnglish
Watched the #LateLateShow from Qatar. Good solid start from @PatricKielty As a former producer of the show, it's great to see it evolving for a new generation. Hats off to all involved. It's a lot of work.. David
