Donald Trump: “We will always be there for NATO, even if they won't be there for us.”
The United States is the only country to have invoked Article 5 of NATO, following the September 2001 attacks. NATO then stated, through the voice of its Secretary General: “If it is established that this attack was directed from abroad against the United States, it will be regarded as an action covered by Article 5 of the Washington Treaty.”
The Allies unanimously acknowledged that the attack had been carried out by the Al-Qaeda group and coordinated from Afghan territory.
Many Allies, as well as other countries, took part in a NATO mission (ISAF) to support the United States in its war against Al-Qaeda and its supporters in Afghanistan.
Present during the initial invasion were: France, the UK, Canada, Germany, and Italy, as well as, outside NATO, Australia and New Zealand.
One third of the coalition’s human losses were those of America’s allies.
1,159 men and women.
Not counting the wounded, in the thousands.
That includes 90 French fatalities, but also 457 Britons, 62 Germans, and 159 Canadians.
One could also mention the illegal invasion of Iraq in 2003. While several key NATO countries opposed it, others supported Washington in this war.
Among those present were: the UK, Poland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Romania… as well as Denmark, now threatened by the United States.
And once again, hundreds of deaths: 179 Britons, 23 Poles, 13 Hungarians…
Despite opposition to this war from France and Germany, NATO deployed a training mission in Iraq, in support of the American operation, in an attempt to contribute to the stabilization and reconstruction of the country. Germany even set up training programs for Iraqi police officers.
Ukraine, scorned by Donald Trump, lost 10 soldiers in Afghanistan and 18 in Iraq.
In the same post, the American president reproaches Norway for having “stupidly” refused him the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Prize is awarded by an independent committee, whose members are appointed by Parliament. This is not an executive power. The committee is composed of experts, jurists, and researchers.
