Because successive governments have slashed Sure Start, youth services, mental-health provision, and family support. Poverty has doubled since 2010. Domestic violence, addiction, and despair have been left to fester. When society abandons families, the State steps in late, expensively, and usually traumatically, then hands the bill to private providers who cream off millions. This is not market failure. This is the market working exactly as designed: turning human misery into dividends.
