I had a great summer working with my 2 @AmherstCollege SURF students, Eric Ingram and Michael Pitts. We made progress towards replicating @neilmjohnson's work from #MITSSAC Currently, we're on object identification using 700 custom training frames. Plan to continue soon! 1/2

Yesterday, we had Ryan Tibshirani out for a talk. Apparently students voted on who to bring out, and he's who they selected. And, the room was absolutely packed, with dozens of attendees standing, some behind a column! Slides: stat.berkeley.edu/~ryantibs/…

Questionably designed experiment I'm running: will our cats sit in a taped rectangle (we feel bad ♻️ boxes, egg cartons, etc)? Ans: maybe. There was at least one confounding factor! Insp: a paper I saw a few years ago by @Explanimals et al.: doi.org/10.1016/j.applanim.2… #CatSquare

I am loving all of the videos of my fellow Spurs fans cheering in bars and "going honking." Can't wait to see Wembanyama in SA! Here's how the probability of SA getting #1 changed with every pick: 14.0% 14.1% 14.2% 14.4% 14.7% 15.2% 16.0% 17.2% 18.9% 21.5% 27.5% 37.8% 52.8% 💯%

I made accidental art while playing with k-means clustering on an image represented as data (e.g., each pixel as <x, y, R🟥, G🟩, B🟦>) to create a color palette of 15 colors. 🎨 Can you guess what the source image was? 🛋️ #DataArt #DataViz #R4DS #RStats #GenerativeArt #ggplot

I don't think Twitter itself is disappearing entirely and I don't have a huge following here. But, some of the accounts I've learned a lot from are moving, so I'm going to split my academic social media presence and attention for now. You can find me at fosstodon.org/@ryanmcshane
Geeking out because my first ever #OEIS sequence has been accepted and is now live: oeis.org/A357266 I've had @xkcd #2016 hanging on my wall for a long time as a reminder to prepare the submission, which was fairly painless! The sequence is related to work I started 1/2

I updated the template and used it to create my poster for the @InstMathStat New Researcher's Conference. As the last commitment I made while affiliated with Amherst College, I presented my poster using posterdownLaTeX github.com/math-mcshane/IMS-… I'm on the market for a Post Doc!
Thanks again @slbunnell, Riley, & Lisa for putting on a great course design workshop at @AmherstCollege. I focused a competition (sports/video & tabletop game/election) data science course. It was really helpful to make a topic map in thinking about what I cover, when, and why!
