As Mayor of the safest big city in the nation, I want to share a perspective on ICE use of force and the tragic death of Renée Good. Policing urban areas is a special skill that requires a significant level of training and the ongoing work of building community trust. Absent that trust and training, tragedies are inevitable. Our @SanJosePD is the best police force in the country. So I can tell you that safety doesn’t happen by accident — it’s built. Law enforcement officers can’t play the role of judge, jury and executioner in our country. If and when ICE is in our cities, they need more than a badge, a gun — they need the specialized training that is the hallmark of every excellent urban police force.  Renée Good should have woken up this morning with her family. Instead our entire nation is waking up to grapple with her death. At this profoundly sad moment we need to ask our leaders to go beyond partisan politics. Our mission should be to learn from this tragedy so we can prevent another one.
