This is Emily. Emily stays inside. She reads. She writes poetry. She writes letters. She bakes. She does a bit of bird watching. Then she writes some more. Emily is safe from COVID-19. Be like Emily.

As I have no wish to participate in any way in the ongoing fascist takeover, I have decided to stop using this account. I will continue to visit occasionally for the sake of the three (3) people I can't follow elsewhere whose tweets stimulate and comfort me. (You know...

Just to clarify: I am increasingly ill-at-ease on this app and I do not feel safe here. Hence the pseudonym. "I'm nobody--who are you?" Albert Gregor is an operatic character and I have the sweetest dog--who needs a picture of me?

When I was a schoolboy, a history teacher (!!) said in class that the word "Slav" was derived from "slave." I already knew better, so I complained to my Polish immigrant mother, who in turn complained to the principal. The only novelty here is the reference to white people.
This is referred to as “folk etymology” These two words don’t share a root. They converged in sound and ignorant people assumed they were related. They are not

Obvs. this is not *really* about etymology (one of these words is said to be derived from the other, but no one is quite sure which). It is entirely about upholding white supremacy--bearing in mind that Slavic people are regarded as *honorary* whites outside of Eastern Europe.

When my French father decided to marry my Polish mother, there was opposition from some members of his family on racist grounds, something she never forgot.

I've had Covid twice. Thankfully, I didn't get brain fog, but both times one of the early symptoms was a sudden mood change--I started feeling both angry and sad for no clear reason a couple of days before I tested positive (so it can't have been a response to the diagnosis).
My second bout of COVID is instructive. Physical symptoms have been mild but the brain fog is chronic and anxiety has gone haywire. This is what happened to me two years ago, triggering all manner of problems I’m still dealing with. (Mental illness as symptom of Long Covid.) 1/4

In both cases, my mood went back to normal after my other symptoms cleared and I tested negative again. This is the first time I've heard of another person with a similar experience.

The anti-racist response in the UK is heartwarming, but if the example of France is anything to go by, it won't be enough. The far right will continue to gain ground until something is done to stop it, and that certainly won't involve sending people to Rwanda.

In 1954, Gabriella Tucci sang Anna in Nabucco at the Baths of Caracalla. Still wondering why a bit part attracts so many famous singers.

The concept of a first (or second, or third...) language only makes sense if you live in a world where one is enough. Displaced/formerly colonised people, or members of minority groups, often don't have that luxury. My Polish-born mother spoke French like a native. An ex of...

...mine was raised speaking French, Portuguese (his father's language), Spanish and Arabic. If you are British or American from an English-speaking background, or French from a French-speaking background, then things are different and you can have a "first" language.
