Boston bike Twitter: I’ve never loved a bike like this one, and it went missing from our locked patio last night in the South End. Presumably someone saw me joy riding and returned to hop the fence overnight. It’s a Scott Sub Active e-bike. Reward. @universalhub

Do you want to replicate this with your bike lane in your neighborhood? Here's how you can do that 🧡:

What an absolute failure of government that these vehicles continue to operate on public roads. What's the point of a cautionary tale if no one does anything about it?

"No! You stay!" A cop, on video, yells at a wayward driverless car like it's a dog. More than a dozen reports of autonomous vehicles interfering with fire emergency scenes Police, firefighters at wits' end β€”Β from @esksf missionlocal.org/2023/05/way…

RIP Buzzfeed News. Also, if you publish stuff online that you're proud of, back it up! Print a PDF and hide it away. Take from me, someone who published 130 articles from 2010-2019, of which <5% are still online because the websites shut down or switched platforms or both.

I've gotten a lot of questions while out on my e-bike, but today, waiting at a red light, a guy on a literal motorcycle was excited about how fast I was able to go (and I left him behind a few blocks later). βš‘οΈπŸš²πŸ’¨ Electric bikes are the future.

🚨URGENT CALL TO ACTION 🚨 You likely have already heard the disappointing news: with no explanation, the DCR has canceled Saturday access to Riverbend Park. Here are three things we need you to ask your membership to do this week: (🧡 below)

I admit that I was a free-fare skeptic, but I'm coming around on cases like the @MBTA, where they'd spend as much or more collecting fares. Just take the L with Cubic and move on. mass.streetsblog.org/2023/03…

Or municipalize? Thankfully Boston is in a better position, owning the hardware and only contracting with Lyft for ops. But as Tech contracts, it's time to thank the VCs for subsidizing the experimental phase and treat bikeshare like the public good it is.

The effort needed to fight climate change does feel overwhelming, but I've seen too many good people get weird EV brain. If you're desperate for a solution, but don't want to do any hard work, then EVs for all! Except when they're actually worse in practice, then Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―
This is terrible. If you electrify buses but reduce service, that's worse for the environment than doing nothing. Even diesel buses pollute less per passenger mile than electric cars. (Source: itf-oecd.org/good-to-go-envi… ) Stop obsessing over electric buses. Just expand service!

It’s sad how cities across California got it so right during the height of the pandemic and then rushed to free up yet more space for cars as soon as they could.

We have too many tiny airports and not enough houses or transit, partially because the FAA makes it so hard to close an airport. Bravo Santa Monica for sticking with it, and kicking off the process to put all that land to better use. planning.org/consultants/rfp…

Providence street question for @DigitalSciGuy: Are these bike/ped markings a mistake? Are they telling pedestrians to walk in the street, and do they run into each other?

My mom was a teacher, so most of her friends are my former teachers, and once a year we repeat this convo. Mom: Do you remember Mrs. X from your high school? Me: Yes, she banned me from the computer network for hacking. Mom: Oh, ha, anyway she’s taking a pottery class now.
