Parasitic flatworms known, as flukes or trematodes, are responsible for some of the most debilitating neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affecting billions of people worldwide. Schistosomiasis, caused by blood flukes, is a significant health risk in many tropical regions.
The need for more effective treatments and a growing resistance to currently available drugs has pushed researchers to find new solutions.
In a groundbreaking study, MCW’s Dr. Jonathan S. Marchant and his team identified a new class of compounds called benzamidoquinazolinones (BZQs) that show promise as broad-spectrum treatments for trematode infections in humans.

I am so, so excited to share that I am starting my own lab at the Medical College of Wisconsin @MedicalCollege in the Dept of Cell Biology, Neurobiology, and Anatomy @MCW_CBNA!!
The Sheahan Lab will open its doors in October and study how neuropeptides shape somatosensation. 1/6
