You know the whole "left brain is analytical, the right brain is creative" tripe? Well, that's not how it works! My colleagues and I just published a new study on the resting-state functional connectivity of eminent creative thinkers and we found some interesting things about the brains of highly creative people at rest (compared to non-eminent creators): 1. Extraordinarily creative individuals showed increase functional connectivity between the left and right hemispheres of their brain. 2. Extraordinarily creative individuals showed increased functional connectivity between their frontoparietal and sensorimotor regions. This may suggest that they can more readily access their bodily sensations and short-term tactile memory consciously. 3. Extraordinarily creative individuals showed increased functional connectivity between their frontoparietal and default mode network regions (or as I've called it, the "imagination network"). This may suggest that highly creative people have their rich imaginations (or projections of possible social worlds in the future) more "on call" and ready to be used by their consciousness when needed. 4. Extraordinarily creative individuals showed *decreased* connectivity between the occipital cortex and both the posterior cingulate and frontal opercular regions. This is consistent with prior research and I can only speculate but it seems that creative thinking may be aided at times by limiting conscious input of the outside world (I'd like to see more research on that possibility). In general, it's pretty clear that the right brain-left brain dichotomy needs to be updated, especially when it comes to creative thinking. Creative people draw on the resources of their ENTIRE BRAIN, or at least whatever resources they can get. They have very flexible brains that can more easily glide between different large-scale brain networks.
