(1) A Story of Science on Alaska’s Yukon Delta | Chapter 1: The Place The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, a vast and remote 32 million-acre coastal plain in southwestern Alaska, is considered by many the 3rd most important region for breeding waterfowl in all of North America, behind only the Prairie Pothole Region and Western Boreal Forest. It is the homeland of native peoples of Alaska, including the Cup’ik, Yupik, and Athabaska, and also where we find the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. This seemingly endless expanse of tundra, wetlands, and winding rivers provides a summer home to millions of waterfowl, shorebirds, other migratory birds, and a handful of waterfowl researchers who have spent careers studying its bird life and improving our understanding of these magnificent animals and their habitats. #DUPodcast | Ep. 539 – Dropping Ducks and Shooting Snipe with Winchester Ammunition Few activities are better for strengthening partnerships and building memories than bird hunts afield. On this episode, @mgbrasher is joined by Jake Wallace of @Winchester, Will Brantley of Field and Stream, and Mallori Murphey of Ducks Unlimited to share stories from a recent weekend featuring new products from Winchester, successful duck hunts, first experiences with snipe hunting, the perils of gumbo mud, ammo manufacturing insights, and a shared commitment to conservation. A wonderful night, and honored to share in the excitement. Thank you @TuskegeeUniv Red Tails! 🦆💪
"Dream Big, Dream Often, and Dream in Color." Those were the words of Jerome Ford, @USFWS Assistant Director, Migratory Bird Program (@USFWSBirds), as he addressed, motivated, and inspired the students of the Tuskegee University chapter of Ducks Unlimited. The night marked a historic moment for the organization, as the Tuskegee Red Tails became the first-ever HBCU chapter to hold a DU event. The night also included recognition of the Federal Duck Stamp program as stamps were given to each attendee, courtesy of Sam Soholt, @PublicLandTees, and the Stamp it Forward project. Special thanks to the Alabama DU family for supporting the event and honoring the students' courage and passion for wetland and wildlife conservation. More super cool bird genetics science and conservation here. @LavretskyLab can we do the same for mallards with duckDNA.com? 😁🦆
Led by new PhD Matt DeSaix, our latest paper uses advanced low-coverage whole genome sequencing (lcWGS) to uncover the intricate migratory connectivity patterns of American Redstarts 📷 This helps us craft conservation strategies to preserve both numbers and genetic #Diversity

MIGRATION ALERT: More than 600 MILLION birds predicted for tonight! Given the tragic mass window collisions in Chicago (see our previous post), it's an important time to dim nonessential outdoor lights at night & make your windows safer for birds: birdcast.info/science-to-act…

Incredibly proud of my good friend, Jim Inglis, for this much deserved recognition! Congrats, Jim!!
Last weekend, longtime Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever employee Jim Inglis was honored by his alma mater, Mississippi State University. Inglis was one of eight former students inducted into the 2023 Alumni Fellows program and was recognized during MSU’s home football game against the University of Alabama. Now a 22-year veteran of Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever, Inglis has served the organization in countless capacities — from chapter volunteer to the organization’s first farm bill biologist coordinator — to his current role as the director of government affairs. “Jim’s career path shows just how dedicated he is to conservation,” said Ron Leathers, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s chief conservation officer. “He’s been involved in our habitat mission at every level and continues to be a tremendous voice for the organization. His impact, not only on Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever, but on habitat conservation in general, is profound. Jim deserves this recognition and much more for his decades of service.” Read more about Jim and his MSU Alumni Fellows induction, at the link below. pheasantsforever.org/BlogLan…

Thanks to @USDA_APHIS for the partnership! 🤝 🦆
BREAKING: @USDA_APHIS has issued its 2023 rule regarding the import of game birds from Canada. After close consultation with waterfowl scientists from DU, APHIS has revised last year’s rule to allow skin to remain intact on hunter-harvested carcasses. All previous restrictions remain the same.
