The plot may be simple but it absolutely works.
Not only that, but it has so much heart and it's gorgeously shot on film by John Mathieson (Gladiator, Logan) who dives head first into that noir-style lighting.

Detective Pikachu should've gotten the attention that the Minecraft Movie got. I think this movie fucking rocks, which says a lot because I wouldn't call myself a Pokemon fan, EXTREMELY underrated movie imo.

Is this where we’re at in the state of film criticism?
Wanting a good children’s film is not equated to wanting a masterpiece like The Godfather, it just means we can aim for media for younger audiences that are also well made and not mindless, corporate slop - WHICH WE HAVE.
I promise you, not one living soul on God's green Earth wanted or needed the Super Mario Galaxy movie to be anything like The Godfather or a Christopher Nolan film. Please be honest with yourselves.

Dominic McLaughlin is such a perfect Harry. It’s like he jumped on the screen from the pages. In these short two minutes we got, I have felt more empathy towards his character (and joy) than in the eight movies combined. Finally, we got an actor who can actually act. He’s huge!

People saying “iT’s GrEy” really speaks to level we’re at in discussing cinematography as an art, and the lack of knowledge or understanding in what constitutes as good cinematography.
Grey = bad, apparently.
Half-Blood Prince has depth, contrast, shadows - it’s beautiful.

and it’s the only Potter film to ever be nominated at the Oscars for Best Cinematography, shot by one of the greatest working cinematographers today, and is a lasting beacon of what big budget blockbuster filmmaking can look like.

My expectations were so unbelievably low for this, but it's certainly quite endearing - especially the art direction.
Visually it's... adequate, but falls into those modern pitfalls of muted colours and doesn't hold a candle to Columbus' work on the first Harry Potter film.

I simply wouldn’t have believed you if you told me back in 2017 that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man would go on to share a screen with Jon Bernthal’s Punisher.
Seeing it in motion is still causing a bit of a malfunction in my brain.

VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED: Muslim woman "targeted" in horrific hit and run.
Shocking footage shows the moment a woman in a hijab in her 20s was ploughed into by a car in Abbey Wood, south London, on Sunday.
She incredibly survived the horrific collision and her condition is deemed not to be life-threatening or life-changing.
The Metropolitan Police are now looking to identify the driver and have appealed to the public for information.
No arrests have been made so far and detectives are considering "any possible motive", although locals fear a targeted attack.

As depressing as the death of cinemas would be, Netflix was ultimately the lesser of two evils here.
Art can still survive outside of cinemas, but it can’t survive under mass regulation.
