We found that GraphCast can forecast tropical cyclone trajectories more accurately than traditional methods. In September, a live version of GraphCast was used by @ECMWF to predict that Hurricane Lee would make landfall in Nova Scotia - 3 days earlier than previous approaches.

One of the most fun things I do is work with a large team that leverages machine learning and other novel methods applied to social media data to inform environmental decision-making. This paper in Current Sociology summarizes these advances: doi.org/10.1177/001139212312…

3 of the top 12 apps Microsoft advertises are gambling. This is the best the Microsoft ecosystem has? This is what Microsoft can muster? Gambling apps you always lose because you can't even cash out? Why not just make an app that kicks you in the head and takes your kidney?

How oppressively humid has this summer been? Only halfway through and already in 4th place when looking at dew point hours of 20.0° or higher at #Halifax YHZ. We know summers are getting warmer with climate change; noteworthy to see top oppressive years are since 2010. #nswx

This is how AI is most likely to destroy humanity: not in a glorious war following its escape from the digital world, but incrementally, through an inevitable series of abuses, misapplications, and overuse on tasks for which it is not ready. This way just makes for a boring movie
