A really interesting proposal from the last plenary @MuslimsInBritRN #ConvertsConference about guidance for UK mosques on how to receive & support converts. Maybe where @IslamUKCentre's Imams project could look at *how* to disseminate this.

I chaired a fascinating, almost frighteningly synergistic panel on history and legacy of late 19th C European converts to Islam. Apologies that it was indeed a manel, though female scholars are amply featured at @MuslimsInBritRN #ConvertsConference

Flying visit from my self-imposed exile from Twitter to share photos and news from today's @MuslimsInBritRN conference with @IslamUKCentre at @cardiffuni The subject is transformation and Muslim convert experience, led ably by @sgilliat and @DrAsmaKhan7's project.

I was in London yesterday for an event hosted by @cfmmuk on media language around Muslims and Islam. Lots of journos present, which was great. Glad to make the trip across, and glad their style guide tool is active and ready for use. staging.cfmm.org.uk/terminol…

One of the terms we had a fair bit of discussion on was Islamic State (the group as opposed to the concept), so I'll also drop a link to my chapter on the social contest around media naming of the group (sadly, a paywalled piece of writing, but hit me up) link.springer.com/chapter/10…

Brilliant to see you and so many others at our on campus Connections to Grangetown event yesterday for @cardiffuni staff and students to learn more about Community Gateway and civic mission projects!
I came a little late for the discussions but enjoyed meeting colleagues and carrying the @IslamUKCentre banner to the @CommunityGtwy Love Grangetown networking event today on campus. This is right up our alley!

I’m inspired by Hunter’s post. I lost my taste for Twitter since Musk took it over, conflicted about participating in it but hearing the arguments about it as a continuing space to resist. But the gains are low, the site sucks, and BlueSky has been more like the space I want.

There is a community there. It’s not perfect, but neither was Twitter when it was good, and now it ain’t good. I have the same username there. There are good people there, smart academics, funny people. Darth is there. You should come. You don’t even need an invite code.

I've been posting blogs about the songs on my record Driving Through America at Night. The latest is about "November", which was nearly cut from the album but saved by a crunchy Rhodes line. Plus, a window into the sketchy home recording setup. anearthwithoutgrammar.wordpr…

It's been wild being back on Twitter consistently this week to post about #SocRel24 Very happy to now take that energy back to Bluesky, & all are of course welcome to join me! Anyone who's just started following me - e-mail is good, or who knows? Maybe I'll see you on LinkedIn.

Final paper is also in the cult/NRM wheelhouse. @bethanjuliet brings us research on apocalypticism, Satanism, and the tried and tested sociological concept of the moral panic. #SocRel24

Though there are UK examples, especially from the 90s, Bethan takes us through a history of the Satanic panic of the United States. Contrasting with more current concerns, the historical examples emerged out of interest groups. This shift is the focus of her paper. #SocRel24

Interesting that Bethan is sensitive to the moral panic over moral panics. This is helpful reflexivity as we study contemporary phenomena. I’m also amused at the idea of the Devil as folk devil. #SocRel24

From @AledJLlThomas with emerging paradigms around NRMs/minority religions, we turn to Eileen Barker @InformReligion who has really laid the boundary markers for this whole sub field. #SocRel24

Glad to be hearing @AledJLlThomas on the final session of #SocRel24 He’s speaking on the vital topic of ‘cult’ rhetoric, in a paper co-written with Edward Graham-Hyde. #SocRel24

This is fascinating. Aled is looking at new heightened tensions/relations [delete as appropriate] between academics studying NRMs and anti-cult activists. Me personally, I blame social media. #SocRel24

An important question Aled is openly engaging with is how to use narratives from ex-members as data, managing their obviously sited perspective without just dismissing it out of hand. Here, I think e.g. Ninian Smart could be helpful. #SocRel24
