To be effective leaders of change & improvement, we can’t take a "one-size fits all" approach. The change methods need to fit the goal/problem, not the other way around. @Digitaltonto identifies 3 types of change problem & offers links to methods to support each: 1) Strategic shift: where senior leaders make a decision & effective communication & coordination is needed so everybody understands the new context & can play their role. 2) Individual behavioural shift: where many people are needed to change their own behaviours, requiring a big investment in building trusting relationships & psychological safety across teams. 3) Collective action: where shifts are needed in individual & collective behaviour on a large scale. This is more like a social movement, where momentum & critical mass are built by empowering early adopters and helping them to build connections with others. digitaltonto.com/2025/3-type…

Most transformation efforts fail. Major new research from @BainandCompany says only 12% of big change programmes produce lasting results. They identify six "good practices" for large scale change strategies that greatly increase the likelihood of success: 1) Treat transformation as a continuous process rather than a discrete programme. 2) Build it into the operating rhythm of the organisation 3) Explicitly manage energy for change - sequence changes to avoid widespread organisational fatigue 4) Use aspirations, not benchmarks, to set goals - top-down data driven mandates can crush transformational thinking 5) Adopt a “middle-out”, rather than "top down" approach 6) Allow sufficient funding (in the research, nearly every failed transformation wasn't funded properly) hbr.org/2024/05/transformati…. I wanted the first piece that I posted in 2024 to be hopeful, practical & profound. So I chose @adamkahane 's recent article on radical collaboration. Radical collaboration is about working together with diverse others from across the system in a way that fundamentally transforms that system. It not only focuses on the good & harmony of the whole, but also embraces conflict & power issues.
