Applications for a talk at the GRS on Quantitative Genetics and Genomics are due November 10, 2024 (in 2 days!!). We are still looking for more graduate students and postdocs to attend. Applications for poster-only attendance are due January 18th. grc.org/quantitative-genetic…

The GRS and accompanying GRC are a great place for PhD students and postdocs to broaden their network and present research. They are intentionally kept small and foster great discussions. It is one of my favorite conferences and we would love to see you there!

What does the average person do on the morning of their defense? I can't tell if I should go work out or read a book or drink a cup of coffee (probably not that last one though)

I love how the entire campaign of George Santos was just the plot of The Producers. The guy must have been terrified on election night when the numbers came back in.

Ah yes, avoid crossing a picket line by crossing a picket line. Why didn’t I think of that!
Ah, thanks Browne Center for this one simple trick to avoid crossing a picket line!

Is every university international services office completely useless or is it just @UMNews?

So if it wasn’t obvious, this is nonsense. Even if we knew which genes were responsible for EA (we don’t) you can’t just take those and extrapolate them to another civilization. Genes don’t exist in a vacuum, and complex traits like EA are going to vary widely by environment.

So why should we care about these weird claims? Well, the people spreading these are saying we should use this as evidence to use eugenics today. They will say the fall of Rome was due to bad genes and the only way we don’t follow them is to control pick which genes get passed on

And these claims don’t fall on deaf ears. You hear these claims repeated from our policymakers. You hear people with much greater reach than some nut on Twitter saying these same things. We absolutely need to push back whenever we see them.

There’s something truly hilarious about Arby’s wagyu beef patties being exactly 51% wagyu and 49% regular ground beef.

Re-upping this. ALSO! My 'g' key is breaking, so the email in the announcement is missing one: contact plr at uoregon.edu not uoreon.edu. =)
We're hiring! Please pass this announcement on to people who like thinking about genealogical trees, genomic data, and/or data structures! (And, contact me by email or on 🐘, probably not here.)

It sucks that they named their company OceanGate. What are we supposed to call this scandal? OceanGateGate???

New paper alert with coauthors @PeterLMorrell and Laura Shannon! This short preview article gives a glimpse into how a reduction in ploidy and better genomic tools will change (hopefully improve!) potato breeding. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

We discuss some of the results from Wu et al. 2023 and how they fit into the broader context of potato breeding. Wu et al. used phylogenomics to discover deleterious variants in diploid potato landrace populations and how that will relate to inbred dev cell.com/cell/pdf/S0092-8674…

They found a lot(!) of deleterious variants segregating in potato germplasm and released 100 new genomes from 92 solanum species! A super resource for people interested in both applied and basic research across the phylogeny. Looking forward to what comes next with these data!

The article that we discuss in the “preview” is another nice contribution from @yongfeng_zhou @EdBuckler et al. Great input from @middle_author and Laura Shannon in our take on their paper.
