And ironically humanity will spend the next few decades as this unfolds arguing about migration. In reality, the country that can overcome its baser instincts and attract and welcome younger immigrants will be at a major advantage. US is well poised to win on that front, given our immigrant-friendly tradition, but we still might lose for obvious reasons.
A collapse in the global population looks increasingly inevitable. Fertility rates have fallen below replacement in more than 66% of nations. No policy intervention has substantially reversed this trend. And technological progress seems to be accelerating it. A smaller, weirder world is on its way vox.com/politics/491167/ai-s…

this is philly government in a nutshell. the city draws up complex and overlapping regulatory language that is so annoying to follow good actors give up. and the city is bad at enforcing its own rules, thereby incentivizing bad actors to simply ignore the rules

I believe people are UNDER-estimating the cost and limiting effect on their lives of getting a dog before they get one. And they are OVER-estimating the cost and complexity of having a baby. And they are reaching this conclusion because they see so many dogs around and think "Can't be that hard. Everyone is doing it" My hope is that someday, they see so many babies around they reach the same conclusion through the same reasoning.
I think you the direction wrong as people aren’t getting married or having kids, they chose dogs as companions, but if you outlawed dogs tomorrow, you’d see no rise in children imo.

Insane and unacceptable like all crashes. Important to note that bike and ped risk is not evenly distributed. There were as many pedestrians hit and killed last year just along Lehigh Avenue in North Philly as all of South Philly combined inquirer.com/opinion/comment…

I'm doing my part to fight this 🫡
It's remarkable how many independent, secular trends are anti-alcohol right now. Just off the top of my head - GLP-1s - post-1970s rise of helicopter parenting - reaction to the binge-drinking spike in late 20th c - phones killing teenage partying - surge in young adult fitness (dancing clubs down, running clubs up) - general rise of healthmaxxing culture among both liberal yuppies and MAHA devotees

@SEPTA @CouncilmemberKJ the bus stop on the triangle opposite 19th and passyunk is in bad shape. The structure is rusted out, there is broken glass on the ground, and it’s become a dumping spot for trash. Could you please help getting it cleaned up?

I don't think it's sunk in how insane it is that an American vice president was promoting a man who banned his opponent from appearing on TV.

My uncharitable view is that insecure people increasingly treat their dogs like humans because they know a dog lacks the agency to reject them like a human could
i'm not a bioethicist studying human-dog relations, i'm just a guy, but there's no "arms race" going on. dog owners knowingly and blatantly violate long settled, clearly established norms and formal rules and people aren't happy about it

So not only will this cost $3 million that could go to other services, it also incentivizes illegal and/or antisocial behavior-- what exactly are we doing here

The city shouldn’t encourage people to be assholes, regardless of income. I don’t think we should pay for someone to park in a crosswalk or a bus stop just because they are low-income.
