A pre-registered study published via @arxiv, "Engagement, User Satisfaction, and the Amplification of Divisive Content on Social Media" found the tendency of Twitter's algorithm to push politically aggressive content onto users. A large sample of active Twitter users was split into two groups. Group A would be shown tweets recommended by a personalized algorithm. Group B would be shown tweets in chronological order, from people who they follow. Researchers found that 62% and 46% of tweets recommended by Twitter's algorithm to Group A expressed anger or out-group animosity respectively. Whereas 52% and 38% of Group B's recommendations via a chronological feed, expressed anger and out-group animosity respectively. The research highlights the need for content recommendation algorithms which produce constructive engagement, rather than relying upon sensationalism.
