I can't say how much this hits me in such a strange way. I clearly never met him but this tool influenced my career, even part identity (I'm a vim user), and it's something I still use to this day. I couldn't imagine having built something that impacts as many people as vim does.

Always love running across this quote. I get asked all the time how one can "lead without being a manager" and this is always what I think about. We all lead, we all influence, doing is more meaningful than telling.

I've been noticing this at work a lot where I care less about rules and more about values and themes. Flexible ideas that guide work and decisions and can be adapted are so much more powerful than a checklist or a "must do" list.
