Just realised that Rakendu Mouli, who is the Telugu dialogue writer for MAHAVATAR NARSIMHA and COOLIE, was missing from both the press meets that happened in Hyderabad. He wasn’t invited apparently. This isn’t the first time writers are being ignored on promotional platforms. Sure, popular faces will fetch the film the reach it but don’t writers and lyricists, who play an equally important role in taking films to audiences beyond languages and boundaries, deserve equal respect? Sad thing is, Rakendu is an established, proven writer. Imagine what struggling and new writers/lyricists must be ensuring. Dear stars, directors and producers, PLEASE RESPECT WRITERS AND LYRICISTS.

This is the approach followed by all industries prior to Covid (before OTT made inroads). Content should be made for theatrical viewing. Then we get quality films. Music used to dominate Bollywood to such an extent in Aashiqui days (90’s) that Hindi (and other prominent language) producers started producing movies by keeping music as the target. Later on satellite channels (2000’s) started buying rights for high prices). Then certain films (especially small films) started being made by keeping big comedians and character artists in their films. Some producers used to hire these actors for a day or two so that they can feature them in posters and promos so that they get better satellite rights. Satellite market started dwindling. Then came Hindi satellite market for Telugu films. Certain type of films started making minimum guarantee money by inserting good number of action sequences in their films so that it attracts Hindi satellite buyers. With Covid, OTT started flourishing. Initially they bought movies for attractive prices. Then some of our filmmakers started exploiting that market. After realising that, OTT management started putting a lot of restrictions and rules. It came down to a hybrid model for small and mid-sized movies where OTT will give 50% of the budget for small films as their fee and reserve rights for OTT. Producer has to release the film through theatres and recover his 50% though theatrical and other rights. Some OTT platforms are giving just pay per view option for small films. As long as the producer aim at theatrical release and treat theatrical income as the only source of revenue, the quality in scripts and output will be good. Otherwise, the success rate of the film is very low as people are used to alternative entertainment.
